Welcome to BHCA
National Parent Club for the Basset Hound
We recently experienced an issue with our web site hosting that caused the site to revert to August 2020 content. Please bear with us as we restore new site information. If you see a page that needs updating, please contact Anne Testoni and it will be addressed as soon as possible.
Thank you for your patience!
The Basset Hound Club of America’s Board of Directors regretfully informs everyone that the 2020 BHCA National Specialty and associated events have been canceled. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. Our highest concern is the health and safety of our membership, exhibitors, judges, and guests. After reviewing the current State of Illinois phased approach to recovery, reviewing CDC guidelines, listening to medical authorities, and many of our members that have said they will not be attending, it left us with no choice but to cancel the 2020 Nationals.
Our 2020 conformation judges have been contacted to verify their willingness to judge the 2021 Nationals. The 2021 Nationals will be held in Lima, Ohio, October 1- 8, 2021. We will let you know the schedule for the 2021 National as soon as possible.
The board also approved the 2020 Nationals venue be moved to 2022 at the same location (Mercy Health Sports Center) in Rockford, IL. Dates will be Oct 2-7. Sharon Nance will be the Coordinator.
If you’ve made a hotel reservation, you will need to call the hotel to cancel.
The American Kennel Club has published recommended best practices for holding or attending AKC events during the COVID-19 pandemic. For your convenience we have posted the links below.
With the cancellation of the 2020 Nationals, the BHCA Board of Directors voted to move the judges who were elected to judge the 2020 Nationals to judging the 2021 Nationals. All judges for the 2020 Nationals have agreed to judge the 2021 Nationals in Lima, Ohio.
Because of this decision, the board has also canceled the 2021 nomination and selection process for the 2021 Nationals judges. All ballots that were received will be destroyed. Nominations will take place next year for judges for the 2022 Nationals, with information published in the 2021 March/April issue of the Tally-Ho.
A letter to BHCA members from President Richard Nance: Letter to BHCA Membership 4-11-20
The novel coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus is affecting our lives in many ways. We encourage everyone to follow local, state and federal mandates to help mitigate the impact of this disease. Please consult the US Centers for Disease Control and World Health Organization web sites for the latest information on the disease and methods for keeping you and your families (human and canine) safe.
According to the American Kennel Club, there are no known cases of dogs or other common companion animals being infected by the COVID-19 coronavirus. Owners should continue to follow basic hygiene with their dogs, but no special precautions are necessary. There is certainly no need for a dog to wear a face mask.

Many AKC events are being cancelled due to the closure of sites and mandates against mass gatherings. Please check the AKC Events Cancellation page for the latest information.
To date all BHCA and Member Club events through the end of May 2020 have been canceled either by the host clubs or by direction of the BHCA Board of Directors.
All BHCA member clubs should read the letter from the AKC to clubs about event cancellations and the policy on rescheduling, event fees, etc. You can read the letter here: AKC Letter to Clubs - COVID-19 and Events
