BHCA is facing a significant budget shortfall as we go into the 2026/2027 year. To provide you with some context, our income has continued to fall as our membership has declined over the past 10 years. At the same time, our expenses have risen, primarily for the Tally-Ho magazine which, by itself, currently costs more than we bring in as income. We will manage this in the current year by drawing from savings, but savings have always been oriented to one-time costs, not to annual costs. This is not a sustainable plan for our budget.

Very soon, we will need to make some decisions about the Tally-Ho budget specifically. We are reaching out to ask your input on what changes you would prefer to see. It is likely we will need to make more than one change to balance the budget, but your input can help us shape these changes.

In brief, we have seven basic options for managing printing and mailing related costs:

  1. Eliminate Tally-Ho as a printed magazine and distribute digitally instead.
  2. Reduce the number of issues from six per year to four.
  3. Keep the publication frequency at six issues per year, but alternate between three printed issues and three digital-only issues.
  4. Print a limited number of copies for people who are unable to access Tally-Ho online and distribute digitally to all other members.
  5. Reduce specific content.
  6. Regarding the Membership Directory, eliminate the paper directory and rely solely on the directory on the website.
  7. Raise dues to cover a portion of the cost.

We are distributing a survey to members through the link that follows, as well as on-paper in the Tally-Ho this month. We will use your input to shape our discussion of how to bring the budget back under control.
