BHCA was awarded the AKC Eddy Award for excellence in breeder education in 2023. The award honored the creation of Basset Hound University (BHU), which houses courses, self-correcting quizzes, reference guides and videos online. BHU was developed based on BHCA’s belief that educating breeders should be comprehensive and should be in line with how we educate judges, so that we are all working towards the same goal – perfecting the Basset Hound breed!
The BHU concept arose from many successful all-day Education Day events at Basset Nationals, which included classroom presentations, demonstrations with live dogs, DNA testing clinics for disease markers, and opportunities for members to try their dogs in different performance events. BHU includes the Voices of Experience Video Seminar series that provide advice from experts in breeding, conditioning, socializing and showing Bassets with a combined total of 250 years of experience.
Since its launch, the BHU concept and model has been adopted by a number of other breed clubs.
